Just finished Asleep in the Sun by Adolfo Bioy Casares. Haven't spent a lot of time pondering it yet, but I'm not really sure if I liked it or not. I do like that it is South American surrealism (to a small extent), has resemblances to Kafka, and ponders the meaning of identity -- the body or the soul? Of course, in pondering these things, you can also enter some sinister & disturbing territory too; I love the challenge & thinking, while the horror gives me pause. Definitely one that would not be to everyone's liking, but a somewhat unique read for those who like (somewhat disturbing) philosophical pondering. Maybe not a pool or beach read though, lol.

eh!
highly respect Casares, but found this a bit grating. Warmed up to it, but I wonder if the tone was off for me. Invention of Moral also has this sort of plot device, but its' much better done in that novel.

I picked up this book because it was mentioned as one of the possible theories for what was happening in the TV show Lost. It took me a while to get through it because it is a slow, quite book. Once I finally decided to sit and finish it, I read it in one sitting. I won't say too much so that I don't reveal the conceit, but the book is quite good and worth a read on a lazy or indoor-weather Sunday afternoon. While it won't help with Lost or raise any hairs on you head, it will help you consider memory, loss, and the impermanance of human lives.

A very good story teller. I know that for some this is to be a funny book. I just must not have the right sense of humor.
