The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss

Really enjoyed this book overall. Whatever it's faults, it was a compelling read and even though it's 1000 pages it had an epic feel that kept me reading. A couple of the main flaws worth mentioning
1) Kvothe is not a very likeable protagonist at times. He is a braggart and his false modesty is grating at times. I am also heartily sick of hearing how was born a player, a trouper, and an amazing actor. When he tells the story it's great. And he doesn't master everything he does, and gets beaten occasionally. But he is still quite irritating at times.
2) The sections with Felurian go on way too long and I was almost tempted to skip ahead (in the end I just looked at how much longer they went on and ploughed through). Some important plot points but definitely tedious. I also don't like how he just stumbled across her, there as absolutely no lead up at all. She was there, he met her!
3) His ship sinking when going to Severen was apparently very exciting but only given a tiny paragraph. Why say it was a massive adventure with pirates? Why not just say the ship sank?
4) Rothfuss is going to have to cram LOT into book 3! Not that much has actually happened, so if he really is only doing one book is going to have to move fast.

The world Rothfuss creates is very nicely fleshed out, especially the culture and lifestyle of the Adem. The relationship between Kvothe and Denna is also well defined, not just some boring love story; Denna actually seems like a real desirable character.

Well, this book fell into the sequel trap that most books do - it is good and interesting, but you can also tell that the author is holding back the really good stuff for the final book - most trilogies do this - and the books tend to either either go great-decent-wonderful or great-decent-what the frig? - this one I hope will be the former and not the latter - don't get me wrong - this is an enjoyable enough read, but I felt that some of the fire and drive from The Name of the Wind was missing - as far as the King Killer meta-stories go, this one was hit or miss for me, and since I will not present spoilers, let's just say that one of the sub-plots to me was frivolous and boring, and I glazed over it without true interest - though, another of the sub-plots was interesting and didn't end the way that I had guessed, which is also good, as predictable is not always a good thing - and then one of the sub-plots was so spread out, that you wanted it resolved, and Kvothe went and did something else - he had several stories and events happen in between the one that I wanted resolved, and of course that didn't end predictable either - Patrick Rothfuss is good at that part - he gives you everything that you know and love in the storyline, except the endings are all skewed - not bad or failed, but the happy endings never end the way that you think, and I enjoy that immensely - I will definitely be one of the many anticipating book three of the series.

The only bad part is that the 3rd book isn't out yet. Would recommend.

The first silence is just when you finish the book and think about all the pages you read, the plot, the character, the scope. The second silence is catching your breathe from the ending that mostly just made you wish the third book was published and available. The third and final silence is in you trying to figure out where to start actually discussing this book with others...

1000 pages and I lapped it all up. No matter what the scene I find myself just rivetted. Even if things are happening that made me lift my eye brow on one or two occasions.

Entertainment wise, for me, The Wise man's fear is on par with book 1. The world get's expanded, little more of old man Kvothe and Bast get's revealed. Magic and lore is included more, the good and bad sides of it. There is more adventure as about 60% of the book does not take place at the university.

At the end of the book you end up with some answers but a lot more questions which bodes well for the series.

I hate it!! It just ended and I am so mad that there's no book 3 because this was incredible and I need to know how everything ends!! I waited years because this series wasn't finished and that drives me crazy but it kept almost being spoiled so I finally caved and it was wonderful BUT IT JUST STOPS WITHOUT RESOLVING ANYTHING!! If this book and this series wasn't great I wouldn't be this upset but its been like 13 years at this point and there's still no release date.

It's beautiful and the writing is like poetry and sounds incredible read aloud and I love the characters and there's magic and adventure and romance and mystery and yes I recommend this novel.
