Enjoyable and yet something was missing. I think some things just weren’t followed through or some character things felt inconsistent. Things like Trix being down for sex when she hated Maz that much (though hate sex exists ig) or the way Maz went back and forth on how she treated killing.
Also ngl I hatedSarah dying. Felt very pointless to realize she’s alive, find her, oops she’s dead immediately and on accident.
Also ngl I hated

Ooh, I had a lot of fun with this one! There is a lot going on in this short book with a badass MC and an absolutely adorable animal companion. I think my biggest complaint is that it was way too short. This story could easily have so much detail added to it to make it a full-length novel but the action still sweeps you along at such a good pace that even without a deeper foray into the world-building, history, and relationships of the characters it is still a good experience. The narrator, Saskia Maarleveld, also added another awesome layer to this book. I enjoyed her a lot and am going to listen to more of her narrations, especially the historical fiction ones. As soon as the new month starts, I’ll be getting the next Voidwitch book from Hoopla!

Picked it up on a whim, because I've been into novellas lately and Tor.com is a well of good things. Interesting, and quick once I sat down and read it, but took a while to really grab me. I'm more optimistic about the second one now that I'm more invested in the characters and events. Mars is also absolutely awesome, in the partly terrifying and partly amazing sense.

I liked the concept of this a bit more than the execution. I felt a real disconnect from Mars throughout the story. I think the backstory came a little too late, so I had a hard time with all of the violence leading up to the backstory. Mars is very tough and distant, and having finished the story, I totally get that, but it didn't really give me anything to grab hold of for most of the story, which definitely impacted my enjoyment. I do love the concept of Voidwitches. So cool! And Mars' little buddy Seven was an instant win. I also enjoyed the side characters quite a bit. I just didn't care about Mars herself until a bit too late. I do want to read the next novella in this series, and I hope I'll enjoy it more, now that I know Mars a bit better.
