The risk of an anthology is that sometimes the combination is simply unpalatable. The first story in this collection is by far the most disturbing and graphic and had I picked up a physical copy of this book, I'd have likely abandoned it after a few pages. Had I done so, I'd have missed out on a couple of gems, but as this book was barely held together by the genre and lacked a guiding theme more specific than "mystery," it would have been difficult to predict. I'm generally a fan of short story collections, but this one seemed thoughtlessly compiled — a pity.
