Strong collection, great range. Much of this still resonates today. I really thought the preface re: Walt Whitman was excellent and set the poetry in motion for me.

This collection of June Jordan's poetry is a must read even for those who don't know anything about poetry. It's a fundamental piece of art.

My introduction to Jordan's poetry. I had seen her mentioned before but never read any of her poems that I remembered. I bought this book at City Lights Bookstore. I found Jordan's poetry to be interesting, but I was most impressed by the Preface where Jordan writes about Walt Whitman being the people's poet and about his influence on her poetry.

I have admired June Jordan as a person for a few years now. Her life is incredible. The kind of work she did, the kinds of art she advocated, and the kind of person she was are all deeply inspirational to me. But I have never actually read her poetry until now, and I am relieved to find that I love that dearly too. Political poetry has a reputation for being trite or hollow or otherwise artless, and that is a belief I can feel myself leaning into even when I have read so much deeply political, and deeply arresting, poetry. This poetry, here, in Passion? This is beautiful. The playfulness on display, the attention to rhythm and sound, the liveliness and the evident joy in the art of poetry are all so compelling. Excellent, excellent stuff.
