Not sure how r*pe isn’t a higher warning on this list, I found the scene to be pretty graphic and disturbing.
Overall, I was intrigued with how the fairytales were intertwined and changed and I was happy with the were lore that was developed here (it was the reason I kicked it up). However, I found myself expecting more from this book than what it could give. At times it feels overly aware of gender issues and wants to hammer in reflective musings, powerful statements, and life’s purpose. I’m saying this as someone who majored in women and queer studies in college. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, it just wasn’t *my* thing. The characters, as much as I wanted to like them, weren’t compelling enough to me to sell its message.
In my opinion, the one character’s arc is only about her being lusted over, assaulted and tortured, and eventually killed. But I guess she didn’t really “die”, per say. Also? She’s technically the only aroace character since it’s implied she never wanted to be with anyone. Great. A second also: the part at the end with Ursula’s partial transformation where it talks about her breasts? Unnecessary. .
