I wanted to love this picture book. I tried to love this picture. Really, truly.
But I just don't. (Covers head and waits for the wrath of many.)
The illustrations are very nice and the story is sweet, however it just didn't set off any bells or whistles for me. Perhaps I'd love it more if the author had included a brief biography of the real Mary Elizabeth Brown; I might have felt more connected. Or, maybe my problem lies with the rhyming text. Being forced into such narrow parameters (everything must rhyme!) the author was somewhat vague with the details of Ms. Brown's life. Whenever you choose style over substance I think you lose every time.
Overall, it is a perfectly nice and sweet picture book, but not anything spectacular in my mind.

While I myself am a book-lover, I cannot recommend this book. The rhyming and illustrations are fantastic - sometimes funny, sometimes poignant - but I still found it hard to be amused. The main character is addicted to reading, and addiction is not funny, even if it is addiction to books. Books can be friends, but people need real people as their friends too! The end is a bit redeeming, but it doesn't undo the whole book's message.

The quickest way to establish media literacy in children is for them to construct media themselves. I think this book is especially valuable for places around the world who don't yet have established public library systems. This book helps a child imagine how a public library starts out and gets constructed.

Hey, you child, could grow up and create one just like this lady did!
