1986 seems like a lifetime ago! This book is a detailed lesson in persistence and believing in one's own self, from the voice and experience of Joan Rivers. While her career (and life) lasted almost 30 more years, she told her story in personal, revealing depth that we often didn't hear from this accomplished woman.

I read this primarily as research for my podcast, Advanced TV Herstory. However, if you are a fan of comedy, television or someone who thinks your own self-doubt is preventing you from pursuing your dreams, this book is for you.

I have always thought Joan River as vulgar, rude and insensitive but reading this book changed my mind. This book details her struggles to enter the entertainment industry. Despite the many times she was told to give up, she never did. Not only did she not give up her dream to become a comedian, she was also the pioneer female comic who paved the way for a lot of female comedians of today. After reading this book, I truly admire her will to succeed and her resilience dealing with rejections and criticisms. She was truly a very kind and giving person. Her mean-spirited persona was really an act....after all, she was an entertainer!!
