3.5 ⭐️ and honestly, it would have been a 4 star if this wasn’t a stand alone book. The entire time I thought I was starting off a trilogy. But then when it ended and I knew there was no more to come, I was disappointed! This is an interesting/very dark concept. Girls being sent to live in the woods during their 16th year because the men believe they have magic that is dangerous to their county. Very hunger games esque. But again, it’s a stand alone book. So don’t get too attached to the characters like I did!
I listened to an interview with the author at the end of the book and she even got emotional explaining where the inspiration for this book comes from. It meant a lot to her! And it was well written and captivating, but boy was it dark and violent. No language, and no real sexy scenes. But I have a hard time believing this is YA? Maybe I’m confused on what YA is. But I wouldn’t have enjoyed this as a 16 year old.
Read at your own risk.

"Your eyes are wide open, but you see nothing." Tierney's mother says this to her at the beginning of the book, and it's true for her then. But it's no longer true when the girls return to the County after their grace year. She has learned to see the women around her in a whole new way. I love how Liggett uses small signs to reveal bigger truths.

The original storyline was greatly enjoyable. The way you were never sure if the magic was real or not, the dreamscape style of settings.
The writing style was off putting though. I was never sure what time period we were supposed to be in and the way the main character seemed to instantaneously fall in love with the male lead was confusing.
