I read this book without knowing that there was another MK novel before it (ISBN# 0812544528), which is different than the first MK book that I read. So there were references that I didn't understand off the bat. I was also left feeling slightly disoriented time wise as to when this was taking place. Oopsy on my part. So when I refer to an MK novel, I'll be referring to this one (ISBN# 1572970596).

Compared to the first novel, I thought that this story was actually a bit better. It seemed to be slightly less cheesy (not that it wasn't cheesy at all) and had a nice flow. What I liked the most about Annihilation were the fight scenes. Yes, it reminded me of the video games a bit but it also felt a lot more natural than the other book. I do vaguely recall the movie and I enjoyed the book far more than that horrible film. I think that was mostly because I could imagine the characters as they really are versus the unfitting actors that played in the movie.

Anyway, moving on. As far as the plot goes, like I said earlier I had felt slightly confused at the time setting. There were references made in the beginning and through the middle of events that had already occurred, but I didn't remember them being in the first MK novel that I had read. I originally thought that Annihilation would expand on the references later, but then I realized that they might just be talking about a book I missed. Other than that, I think the story was simple and very easy to read. It was predictable as all hell, just like Mortal Kombat in all of its glory.

My biggest beef with this book were the consistent grammar errors. I understand finding one error or two, but there were quite a few errors in this. It had gotten so bad that at a certain point, I wanted to bang my head against the wall. English isn't my first language, but I have read enough books to recognize crap grammar when I see it. Being perfectly blunt, I'm surprised this thing was even published given how atrocious it was grammatically. The editors definitely did a poor job with this one.

I only recommend this for the nostalgic value that it comes with. That is the only reason I favored it, because it's a fun reminder of my childhood. It also makes for a hilarious read when you need a good chuckle or pick-me-up.
