Maizon at Blue Hill by Jacqueline Woodson

Note: My professional goal for this year is to read 50+ diverse books. As I attempt to read and review these books, I will be answering the following questions for each book:

Brief plot summary
Maizon gets a scholarship to attend a prestigious boarding school in New England leaving her home in Brooklyn. When she gets there, she discovers there are only four other black students. Will she fit in or will it be too much for her?

How is the book diverse?
African American author and main character

Opinion & reason for rating
I gave this book four stars. It is a really short book so I read it in one sitting. I thought the main character was great and we really got a glimpse into how she feels as she begins this new journey. Unfortunately, I was not a fan of the ending.

How does the book impact me as a person and as a teacher? Why does this book matter?
This book impacted me a lot as a teacher. My school has students of many different races, but most of the students are still white. It gave me greater insight into how some of the girls may feel. The main character is pressured to only hang out with the black students and told that the white students will eventually turn on her. This made me wonder if some of the students I have taught ever felt this way. This book has made me a better teacher, and I will be able to more actively think about what I learned from this book. This book matters because there are not many books like this, and people need to read more books where you can put yourself in the main character’s shoes.

I would recommend this book to...
Teachers and other students especially those at a school with mostly white students. I think it helps everyone gain more perspective.
