I already read the Raven and the Dove series. I also finished the Fairytale series and now it was time to dive into another series by Kaitlyn Davis. I have to admit that I didn't really check what the other series were about. I just randomly ordered one. And when I read the first two chapters yesterday I somehow had the impression this would be a delicious old school ya with love triangles, vampires and special snowflake leading ladies. And I was looking forward to it.

Let me start with stating that I was totally and absolutely wrong. Yes, in a way this was an old school YA in atmosphere, writing style and setting and yet Davis clearly steered away from the obvious tropes I was expecting. We didn't get a love triangle and although our leading lady was unique. She was unique because beings like her are forbidden and their existence is therefore prevented by law. Not so much a special snowflake. More a dangerous weapon created ignoring the rules.

Since this is the first book in the series and since Kira has absolutely no idea about anything at all, there is a lot of world building and explaining in this book. Normally I'm not a huge fan of info-dumps and characters telling lengthy stories to get the mythology across, but in this case it felt very natural for people to tell those stories. Because not just we but also Kira needed to know these stories to find her place in the world and the person she can become.

And Kira's journey, taking everything in, trying to deal with the hand she was dealt, trying to figure out what she had to do and wanted to do, was amazing to witness and it's quite clear this is only the beginning. And even though there were a lot of moments where Kira panicked and cried, I still thought she was an amazingly strong character, standing for the things she believed in and always putting those she loves first.

I can't wait to continue the series!

3.5 stars. I don't know, it just didn't enthrall me like it should. Brilliant ideas and unique paranormal characters. But I felt bored.

It's been a while since I have read a really good YA vampire book. They have become so cliche that I often avoid them. Imagine my surprise when I picked up Ignite and fell in love with it by page 17. I emailed Kaitlyn that minute to tell her how much I was enjoying Ignite. At this point, I wasn't even really certain that the book was about vampires but I suspected as much. But hey...these vampires surfed. I loved Kaitlyn's lore surrounding her vampires. It was unique and well thought out.

Kira make a great heroin. She is faced with adversity and doesn't back down. She knows what she wants and she's going to get him...no matter what anyone says. I loved that she didn't do the whole "which one do I want" thing. She loves Luke as a friend and respects his opinion but that is as far as it goes. Tristan is the one for her, the one who makes her all warm and gooey, the one she dreams about, the one who brings out the fire in her...literally.

I loved Tristan but I felt his character was underdeveloped. He was supposed to be the bad boy but I never got that feel from him. I kind of felt like he had no real internal struggle. He wanted Kira and he would make it happen. Easy peasy. Sexy - definitely, tortured - certainly, take home and have my way with - oh hell yeah. But things were just too easy for him.

Luke is great. He's the supportive best friend when he needed to be and the protective older brother at other times. I enjoyed his light-hearted interactions with his friends and fierce reactions to Tristan and his crew of misfits. Luke was completely believable in his role.

Kira and Luke are conduits. They are the only things that can harm vampires...ever. They don't do it by ripping their bodies to shreds and burning them, they don't decapitate them, they don't stake them. They draw the sun into their body and use it as a weapon. Kira comes to Charleston without any knowledge of who or what she is. She realizes that Luke looks similar to her ex-boyfriend from up north and that his eyes are "psycho" like hers. At least that's what one of their friends point out.

Luke refers to Tristan and his friends as the "misfits." Of course, Luke knows more about them than he let's on. Luke has been sent to protect and watch Kira by the council. She was born to a Punisher and a Protector. These are two groups of people who have the power to either kill (Punishers) or weaken (Protectors) vampires. Punishers believe that vampires have no souls and therefore possess no ability to control themselves and care for others. Protectors believe that maybe vampires do have a chance at normality.

Kira has the powers of both Punisher and Protector which cause her to be a concern to her people and vampires, alike. Secrets will be revealed that leave Kira frustrated and upset with those she is closest too. Kira will have to learn to use her powers in order to save herself and quite possibly Luke and Tristan from death.

Truly, I enjoyed Ignite immensely. I did feel like certain aspects of the story weren't fleshed out enough and from time to time I got a Twilight feeling. That is not a bad thing in my book except to say certain parts lacked creativity. Overall, I would definitely recommend Ignite to anyone looking for a good YA Paranormal Romance.

Ignite, the Midnight Fire series book 1, by Kaitlyn Davis, has me a little mixed. The storyline is a mix of unique and overdone elements, but somehow the two come together well. The plot was well thought out, but maybe a little predictable, but the characters are funny, bright, and well written. If you make me fall in love with the characters, then you have a fan. Luke was the stand out in this story and I suspect he will continue to hold up this motley crew of characters as the series goes on with his wit and light no pun intended conduits (you’ll get that joke after you read the book). I was not a huge fan of Twilight because it painted Bella as a whiny protagonist and a little weak until the end when she has no choice but to be strong. I can honestly say this book had more substance and soul than Twilight and Kira while a little unfocused on reality is strong, driven, and confident. Which is what you want in a female lead.

The story: After spending the last few years away from home Kira Dawson finds herself back at home in South Carolina. The new kid in the local high school, she is ready to get day one over with. On her first day she is helped out by her new knight in shining armor Luke, who quickly befriends her and shares her with his little group of misfits. Luke quickly becomes her best friend, but thoughts of him becoming something more are squashed when the resident bad boy catches her eye. Kira can’t understand the pull she feels toward Tristan, but in the moments they share she has a hard time reconciling the gentle, tortured artist and the man who lusts for blood. Almost killing Tristan is the moment Kira’s own unrealized path comes to light and Luke is at its center, so are the secrets kept by her mother and the community and ancestry from which her new powers come. Her powers and her new responsibilities make her realize she may have to choose between love or the friendship and community she belongs to.

To add to her troubles, loving Tristan means making enemies with his kind and she soon finds herself in the crosshairs of a very pissed off vampire who wants her blood, literally. The path then becomes learning to use her powers, controlling them before they consume her, not hurting Luke along the way, all while loving Tristan. Luke forever a light even when his heart is breaking is a true hero in the making and it is not hard to see this role blossoming in books to come.

Final Thoughts: What I didn’t like about these book was a certain level of predictability that maybe is just a product of my own reading adventures allowing me to understand how the story will unfold. More than that though and the biggest reason I had to give it only three stars is readability. There are a lot of mistakes in this book, ones that jerk you out of the story because you have to reread lines missing words or whole phrases. A few time, I could only shake my head and guess at what was supposed to be written. That being said I enjoyed the story, I especially enjoyed the characters, some more than others. I am looking forward to the next installment, Simmer.

I received this book to review. I was first drawn to this book by the cover it's beautifully done, the cover is exactly how I pictured Kira. The characters are well developed you instantly fall in love with Kira she's the kind of girl you want to be friends with. For the most part the book felt very twilightish with the vampires concept however that is where it ended. I liked that Kira and Tristan where each others Achilles heel as you could say, since they could kill each other. I'm not a huge fan of love triangles I did at first get the impression there might be one. I was expecting to see one with Kira, Tristan and Luke but I never really got that impression it was more like a brother and sister thing for them. Overall I enjoyed the book very much to me the characters are what made the story.

This was a quick read and the plot is interesting. It puts a slight spin on the typical vampire books you read with the introduction of the conduits.

With that said, I struggled with this book. I didn't really care for the main character, Kira. At times she came off as annoying and pushy...I found myself somewhat put off by her personality. The other characters in the story (Luke and Tristan) were interesting and I appreciated getting the back stories on both.

At times I found the story somewhat choppy and although it was implied, I felt like the relationship that was happening between Tristan and Kira was rushed and we missed out on something. It seemed as if they just jumped into the I love you's and we just were given the 50,000 foot view of how they got there.

It was nice that the preview of the next book was included here - I am interested to see what happens and will add it to my to read shelf out of curiosity.
