FALLING BACK IN LOVE WITH BEING HUMAN was my first book by Kai Cheng Thom. In short essays and prose poems, Thom addresses letters to those she’s loved, those who’ve gone before her, and those who have hurt her. The writing is candid and emotive, but the style didn’t really work for me—almost a little too heavy-handed and syrupy. I really appreciated the content of the essays, but the tone was almost kind of... Rupi Kaur-y. In a way that I found distracting rather than engaging.

Some poems were quite strong, others I had a hard time with. The style was a bit repetitive for the bulk of the poems, but I did like the prompts after each poem - that was interesting and had some that I think I'll revisit and do. I think I'm just a little too jaded to really appreciate this. Maybe I will try it again when I am feeling more optimistic but I had a hard time getting into parts of it.

I am sitting here wrecked as I write this review because not only did I journal as I read through this collection, I followed every single prompt/action item, except for the hosting a dinner for friends. I simply texted, wrote or DMed them instead. The prompts in between every few poems were nothing extraordinarily novel or innovative, but paired with what you just read, it evoked such visceral reactions out of me. I had to stop reading and wipe my tears so many times. The authentic tenderness, gentleness, and hope that Kai Cheng Thom writes with reaches out beyond the pages and pulls you in, forcing you to confront your feelings head-on.

This collection of poetry will stay with me forever, and I will try my best to live up to the tenets and values that KCT comments on in these poems. I continue to be so moved and impressed by KCT & she is an absolute gift to the world. I hope we can act in solidarity and compassion for each other and ourselves, because we deserve the world that Kai Cheng Thom believes in.

This is absolutely amazing. This takes a lot at the worst parts of humanity and gives us a little bit of hope. Chang writes with so much passion and grace. Kai narrates the book perfectly and it is very moving. I loved how each letter takes us on a different journey with our selves. I believe this book is universally impactful. It was like Kai giving everybody a hug. This is a book that I feel I will reread in the future.
