I think one rite of passage for kids of my generation was watching children's films which weren't actually aimed at children but had a scary or fantastical element which made them irresistible to watch. These films are : Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, The Return to Oz, The Witches and the the TV Series The Storyteller. Notice all of these also feature puppets and Jim Henson or his son, Brian.

For author and translator, Jen Calleja, most of these movies and tv programs form the basis of her essay, Goblins. The piece starts of with her memories of puppets and goblins, then to her wish to be a goblin and then goblins (aka sexists) she meet in the music industry. The essay also concludes with band members who physically resemble goblins.

This short essay is insightful and Jen Calleja moves deftly from topic to topic. The section about the predatory antics of male rock stars is the crux of the essay but I have to admit the first section about puppets brought a wave of nostalgia as I grew up on those movies and shows as well.

I like it when essays reflect the signs of the times and this does it very well and yet, even though it does lead to heavier stuff, I did enjoy the use of puppet goblins to get the essay's message out.
