My Life as a Goddess: A Memoir through (Un)Popular Culture by Guy Branum

Guy Branum is great at two things: 1) being funny; 2) knowing exactly which personal and cultural circumstances make him funny.

He also appears to have the entirety of pop culture at his fingertips and ready to deploy in any situation, no matter how tenuous the link or how Rube Goldbergian the analogy. 10% of the time this is an annoying compulsion, but 90% of the time it's delightful.

Undeniably entertaining and Branum is brutally honest about himself, for better or for worse. For worse in a lot of instances, where he tells pretty unflattering stories about himself. The book is funny, Branum is funny, but the style is a bit disjointed and meandering. I get that it's supposed to be that way, but I still kept asking myself "where are we going with this" nearly every chapter where a personal anecdote is woven in between an obscure culture reference in a convoluted way to end at a deeper reflection on life. It's a personal memoir combined with thoughts on pop culture, in a way that tries to do both at once. It doesn't always quite fit together. But it definitely will hold your attention.

I wanted some laughs and Guy delivered. This is not strictly comedy though, the poignant chapter about his dad is nuanced and incisive. I could hear the emotion in his voice and it was really moving.

To the people complaining about the chapter on Canada: it was fascinating and hilarious, what is wrong with you.

A few parts were funny & entertaining, but a majority I found terribly boring and couldn’t hold my attention.

Funny and touching in a way I did not expect. Bits had me literally cackling aloud, but I also came close to tears more than once. I’d like to say I’m inspired, but I’m pretty dead inside, so mostly I’m just amused. Definitely an inspirational piece of work though, if you are in a place to be inspired by such things.
