This book is sad, f*cked up, uncomfortable, and beautiful. It really makes you think about emotions and empathy and how we take those things for granted. The ability to love, and how love can change everything. I found the nuanced similarities of Yunjae and Gon fascinating. One can speak eloquently and give you all the definitions of emotions but can’t express them. The other desperately wants to express their feelings but doesn’t know how to and lacks the vocabulary so they resort to frustrated physical acts. One is searching for a way to feel love but can’t feel it and the other is looking to be loved but can’t find it. I also found it really telling who the real monsters in this book were, all of the people that were so quick to judge, stereotype, and so slow to sympathize, and understand.

I was hesitant to read this because it's literary fiction, which I usually have a hard time reading, but I wanted to give it a try because it was recommended to me. I'm glad I did! I surprisingly loved the characters and their character development was great. I didn't fully understand all the things that were going on with Yunjae and his brain, but that didn't stop the impact of the story. The book is fast-paced and obviously very character-oriented, which I think worked well for this book. I do recommend checking this one out.

I really enjoyed the premise of the book (focusing on the life of someone with alexithymia) and I thought the writing was quite good.

my biggest issue was the plot, it seems to end really out of character and random - I do wonder if that's because oh who is narrating, it made it come off odd.

there was also a lot of violence that I did not expect...
