This novel was so dark, despite being set in the City of Lights. The MC was delightfully clueless and grew nicely. The twist seemed a bit too deus ex machina for me to give 5 stars. However, if only I wrote as well as she does, weaving together all these marvelous subplots and authentic details!

I'm happy to be done with Isabel, a spoiled Southern California blonde in France trying to gain sophistication and style through male approval and observation of the Parisian woman. Very good narrator and an excellent read for those who speak French. Diane Johnson is an excellent craftsman but I didn't care much for the main character.

I finished the book because I was engaged enough to want to know what happened. But I never engaged with any of the characters. And I think editors could have cut this down by half. Too much mundane details about unimportant events.

I vaguely remember seeing the movie. Divorce is not a big deal here, so I really didn't see what the big deal was with the title. While this book is centered around Roxy's divorce the book is really about Isabel becoming a woman in Paris. I've never been to Paris but now would love to go. Isabel is a very different person from me so I couldn't identify with her, and not sure if we would be friends. However, the story is very enjoyable and well written. I'm curious to read more of Ms. Johnson's books. What I liked most about Isabel is the fact that she realizes that Paris has changed her in ways that she never would have grown had she stayed in Santa Barbara.

This was a lot of fun, even though I did not particularly like the main character. I realize I'm about 20 years behind in reading this!

I liked the cultural differences portrayed in this book. I thought the main character had good voice while everyone else was also believable. The story was interesting and it ended sort of abruptly, but I thought overall it was a good book!
