I’m sorry, but losing your mind over seeing dead birds that ate plastic? This short story was a waste of time and was laughable at best.

What?

I felt like the connection to climate change here was marginal, that really this was a story about a mother's existential angst over having brought a child into a world that seems unsuitable to raising a child. I could have picked the mother up and plopped her into a war zone or a place without any economic opportunity and the plot still would have worked.

Though I didn't think there was much plot. There were a lot of fancy words and a confusing side plot involving a vanishing primary source and... You know what? I'm not sure why I'm trying to figure out what to make of this story. It was all over the place and didn't seem to have any cohesiveness whatsoever.

Also, I'm so over the drunken mother trope. So. Over. It. It's lazy shorthand to me. Find another way to show self-destructive behavior than falling back on the good old drunken main character will you please, fiction?

Clearly, this story was not my thing.

I really wish this was a full-length work because the storytelling was great, but too short.

Headline: Are we bringing our children into inescapable doom?

Plot: Ang works at the library and is a single mother. After a couple of sleepless night, where she stops differentiating the reality from dream, she feels like she brought her daughter into a word without a future.

Likes: Nice story overall, as this message of giving birth to a new generation on a planet we're making inhospitable is becoming discussed more.

Dislikes: I don't like the ending, it was a bit confusing and felt unfinished and rushed.

I'd recommend this to: scientists, single mothers, and those who think we're near to a pollution induced apocalypse.

Rating: I give this 4/5, as the ending could have been better.

This story focuses more on the emotional upheaval when you're confronted with some of the horrors of pollution and climate change when added on to a life already littered with a ton of stressful issues. Still powerful, but differently so. This one really seems to hammer home the need to focus on mental health.

Insomnia, motherhood, trying to save the planet in an eco-war humans are fighting and losing, and absolutely losing your mind are all contained within this short story. There's a lot packed in here but it was a great read! Especially interested in the insomnia moments where this woman starts fretting over her daughter's future.

Clearly I just like it when Lauren Groff writes about Florida. This is a neat little creepy story and pretty decent on audio. I may check it out again in print to see if I missed anything.

So this is the second "Warmer" story I've listened to. The narrator of this one is quite good but the story is still depressing.
