Technically a 4.5 I'd have bumped up to a 5, but the ending dragged so we back down on 4, my guys.
Powered through the whole thing in a day and a half because it has that can't-put-it-down-because-of-all-these-goddamn-cliffhangers pacing that I adore in books. Amazing concept that makes even shit like grabbing a glass of water off a shelf an intensely suspenseful experience. The inner voices are really characters of their own as well. I had a great time until the whole post-handcuff situation started rolling, which - compared to the rest of the book before it - was boring and felt kind of aimless up until the courtroom. Yes I will be watching the movie.

Gerald Burlingame es un abogado al que le excita hacerle el amor a su mujer Jessie mientras esta se encuentra esposada a la cama. Un día en una escapada romántica de la que no avisan a nadie (por obvias razones) van a su casa de campo y justo antes de empezar el acto al bueno de Gerald le da un infarto, no conforme con eso se desnuca al caer de la cama y ahí está la pobre Jessie esposada a la cama con las llaves al otro extremo del cuarto. Esto ocurre en las primeras 10 páginas. Las poco más de 400 páginas de este libro son solo hacernos ver sufrir a Jessie en líneas cargadas de un terror psicológico puro y duro.
Jessie, la protagonista, es una mujer acosada por su pasado, en especial por un terrible suceso que ocurrió cuando se sentaba en las piernas de su padre para poder ver el eclipse de sol que ocurrió en el verano de 1963. Por las más de 400 páginas vemos como Jessie se va consumiendo y como poco a poco se va adentrando en una espiral que no hace más que descender y descender hasta llegar a rozar la locura. Y es que la pobre, no conforme con verse acechada por los fantasmas del pasado, comienza a desarrollar una especie de curiosa personalidad múltiple, pues todo el libro se la pasa hablando, escuchando consejos e historias e incluso haciendo callar a las muchas voces que la ayudan a mantener la poca cordura que le queda. Tenemos, por ejemplo, la voz de “la bendita esposa” que es su parte más recatada y mojigata, o a Ruth Neary, su parte más atrevida y extrovertida a la que asocia con la voz de una antigua compañera del instituto, esas son las voces con que más frecuentemente entabla conversaciones, pero con el paso de la historia se suman las voces de su madre y de la pequeña Pumkin (Su yo de 11 años) y una serie más de “voces extraterrestres” que no asocia con ninguna persona.
Así pues, cuando estaba en este libro, no importaba cuanto leyera, la historia me parecía interminable. Jessie es una mujer fuerte capaz de cualquier cosa con tal de escapar de su prisión antes de que llegue la noche y con ella El viajero del espacio. Hasta ahora, en mi caso, solo Stephen King ha logrado que empatice tanto con un personaje, cuando leía las partes en las que Jessie tenía sed (y leyendo como se saboreaba los cubitos de hielo y hasta el sudor del vaso de vidrio que hay en la repisa encima de ella) me daba sed a mí también, cuando Jessie siente el miedo, claramente puedes sentir su miedo (e incluso hacerlo tuyo si estás solo y leyendo de noche), y son tantas las cosas por las que pasa la pobre chica que, llegado a cierto punto, ya solo deseas que la pobre tenga una muerte piadosa y no sufra más.
El final, como en la mayoría de las novelas de Mr. King, flojea un poco y a mi parecer si le quitan las últimas 20 páginas estaría perfecto, pero ese último capítulo es el cierre perfecto para tan genial historia, el nivel de terror baja un poco y aun así el autor se las ingenia para no dejar de poner en el dedo en la llaga del sufrimiento de Jessie y que sigamos al vilo hasta la última página.
Sin duda uno de los mejores libros de King.

I didn't like this one. It was hard to read, hard to connect with, and just seemed really creepy. I also hated the writing style for this one. But I tried, I really did. I managed to finish it...
The creepy factor.... That's probably the point but as a woman I just didn't like it. A naked woman for most of the book struggles... It felt like too much. It was....weird.
Not my thing, but that's okay. I'll have to try some of King's other books.

this book was magnificent and it totally captured my attention from the very beginning.
i loved how the story progressed in one location (the Kashkwamak Lake) and has two interchanging timeline— from jessie's childhood, which i called the ‘eclipse’ and the present time in which she is facing a certain death, chained in the bedpost.
this story was full of suspense and a little bit gore from the dog's little dinner of.... anyway, as i said the book was suspenseful because you will really anticipate what is going to happen next to the main character, jessie.
and as expected of the King, it made me shiver in fear and horror when i read that LINE! where the ‘space cowboy’ entered the scene.
i almost closed the book and breathe but i didn't do that
