Great, great message. Fascinating work on communication and what it means to be human....or not human. Writing is very good.

I didn't entirely enjoy this as I read it, but I respect it after. As the author's note explains, it required a lot of research.
Full five stars because it's thoughtful and carefully crafted. Multiple streams come together nicely. It recognizes that we are not a particularly nice species, and it only takes a few really-not-nices to make a real mess.
And gosh, what do octopuses and AI have in common? Reading this book will get you thinking.
I want more about the point-fives, and I really want a whole story about Altantsetseg.
And yes, the AI-operated ships with slave crews were over the top. It's not that humans wouldn't DO it, more that I doubt we'd ever normalize it as we see here.
And no, I don't know how the monks got so powerful; maybe there's a future story there.
Now I am going to read something light and funny.
