Stories like Laina Villeneuve’s Falling All In are important. They have impact and they matter, especially when they represent marginalized and underrepresented individuals. Villeneuve’s portrayal of Sarah and Jasmine’s romance leaves readers thinking about stereotypes, biases and misconceptions—one’s that are often perpetuated by mainstream media. Their unique journey offers readers a window to learn about people who are different from themselves. It’s nuanced, complex and compelling. More importantly though, it provokes empathy and understanding in ways few stories do. Narratives such as this are truly inspiring, especially for those that are able to see bits of themselves inside the pages.

Villeneuve is a brave writer. She doesn’t give her readers cookie-cutter characters or plotlines. She pushes boundaries and ruffles feathers with honest and difficult dialogue. While this may stretch readers’ compassion, it is effective. Emotions are stirred. They are engaged and invested. It may not work for some writers, but it works here. Villeneuve’s bold style yields a dynamic, character-driven story, and it causes them to consider the world around them.

Final remarks…

This is fresh and original storytelling. Villeneuve works to tell a story that affirms identities and validates struggles inside the lgbtq+ community. It’s honest and it’s enlightening. If you are looking for something that’s representative of diverse families and relationships, then be sure to pick this one up.
