A collection of short stories with the thematic consistency of a novel. Most of the stories revolve around a narrator’s encounter with some kind of natural force (hurricanes, wild animals) and how that encounter with disorder changes something in the narrator. I liked this collection much better until the final and longest story, which I found so, so boring.

The short stories in this collection were really a hit or miss with me. One of my favourite stories of all time is in this book, and Lauren Groff's writing style is really good: concise but cutting, reall engaging as well, easy to go through. So the reading process remained enjoyable. I just maybe, after a while, got tired of reading about American experience and American anxiety (and I know that is the point, but oh well.

My favourite stories were: At the Round Earth's Imagined Corners, The Midnight Zone and Flower Hunters.
