I had to use this book in my AP English Class and I absolutely loved it. It had a wide range of essays on a variety of topics ranging from race relations to fatherhood by a variety of authors both classic and modern. It exemplifies good writing and even if you dont like one particular essay there is always another one that you will like. I highly recomend this book, even as a casual read.

A wonderful book for English Composition classes. It makes a good reader for a reading skills class as well. The readings are varied in difficulty as well as period. In fact, several of my students this semester liked the book so much that they are not selling it back to the bookstore!

It's hard to rate since it's an anthology. I liked some of the essays, some not so much. Overall, it was helpful during English class.

This collection offers many essays written by authors of color which is not typical of most anthologies or collections. This introduced me to many authors of color I had never heard of before, and I enjoyed reading the variety of essays.
For teachers: There are Discussion Questions at the end of each essay to guide you in introducing these to your classes.
