I practically grew up reading Citro's collections of New England folklore and supernatural phenomena, I was not aware that his novels were once published with such lurid classic covers. The new editions of 'Shadow Child' have images of a stone root cellar that is actually at the heart of the novel. The Zebra Horror edition has a sinister clown.

There is a clown in the book, but...never mind.

The book was a great deal of fun to read. The characters were well drawn and I liked the altered version of Chester, Vermont that he presents here. Excuse me, "Antrim".

The book is a product of its time but readers will be too busy having ghoulish fun to care too much about the old fashioned aspects.

There's a sequel that I'll hunt out one of these days.

Antrim, VT

Next: 'Guardian Angels'

Didn’t really enjoy the writing style, the title also kinda spoils the “mystery” so there wasn’t much suspense for me plot wise either. Cousins also have a weird relationship that made me uncomfortable
