The other reviews are correct - Mineko doesn't come across as that likeable a person. But if you can get past that, she does have some interesting insights into life as a Geisha. I'll be the first to hold my hand up and say that I knew very little about the geisha lifestyle before reading this (Memoirs of a Geisha has been on my list for years, but I've never gotten round to it and I'm not sure I will now). If you know nothing about geishas (or love everything Japanese) I'd say give this a read, but I wouldn't say you were missing out if you don't pick it up.

Though a little slow to read at points, this book is highly informative and gives so much insight into the inner workings of a Geisha's life. If definitely recommend this to anyone interested in Japanese culture.

I had a huge 6 month break in the middle of this book. The story is quite disjointed and dare I say it, boring in some parts, which is such a shame - I blame the way it is written as the subject matter is very interesting.
