Meh. This is what I thought, unfortunately. I really like Brooks as an author, and truly enjoyed her other books. I tried to start reading "March" previously but could not get into it; only when it was assigned as a book club selection did I devote myself to reading it. The story is meant to be an extension of Alcott's Little Women, which itself was loosely based on Alcott's own family. Brooks took this a step further and imagined what Meg/Jo/Beth/Amy's father had experienced while he was away from his family serving during the Civil War. Parts of the book were very good and held my attention, but others felt contrived and un-authentically quaint. Disappointing, but I still like Geraldine Brooks, and I appreciate the effort.
Fabulous book. Wish I had read it directly after Good Lord Bird as for the picture of John Brown. I may move me to finally get me to read Alcott's Little Women. Some of the scenes made me avert my eyes from the page-- reminded me of 12-years a Slave. This novelist is relentless. Great book.
