Reading M.R. James was like listening to your favorite uncle gleefully telling spooky stories after dinner on a thanksgiving night.
That said, I think I preferred his earlier stories as they tended to be faster paced and more overtly ghoulish.

I couldn’t bring myself to finish because I’m a scaredy-cat… the short stories in this are truly TERRIFYING.

The stories were reasonably spooky but not in the way I was really looking for, especially with the writing style. Learned from a friend when I started that MR James was the origin of a certain Magnus Archives' character's last name, though, and it was pretty neat to see possible influences of the podcast in some of the stories I got through. All that to say, I think I personally would benefit from reading the stories one at a time over a long period instead of sitting down and trying to barrel through 500 pages of them before the library book becomes due
