This is a gory and gothic tale filled with suspense, twists, and little bit of romance. I absolutely love gothic horror and this one was so well written. There were also a few excellent plot twists throughout. In less than 200 pages, Janz was able to craft likable characters and some compelling relationships. There was some intense and grotesque imagery but it was not too bad. I don’t typically like things that are too gory and this was just enough to spook me without actually traumatizing me but everyone’s tolerance is going to be different.

Highly recommend this book if you like gothic horror!

Content Warnings: animal cruelty, animal death, torture, fire injury, death, gore, alcoholism, (some lines by the antagonists that i construed as sexual harassment/ misogynistic in nature but were not condoned by the main character), sexual content

Talk about a great gothic horror novel! The story had me hooked from the start and I did not want to put it down! You’re immediately transported to the world of Arthur Pearce, the Coyles, and the Count - so impressed by how seamless the language was, connecting a modern reader to the classic gothic style. Twists and turns, lots of blood and gore, and captivating characters. A quick read that uses every last page to keep you enthralled. Will definitely be reading more from this author!

A gothic horror with a few too many poe references from an insufferable narrator, but entertaining nonetheless.

I’m not a fan of gothic horror, in fact I think this is the first novel in the genre I have ever read. For a 170 page novel, the story build-up was paced well, without feeling like the climax and ending has been rushed. There are quite a few characters in this story but they are all memorable with unique personalities, and some real mysterious.

There is very graphic violence and gore mentioned AND THE PLOT TWISTS!!! You won’t see them coming from a mile away; at least, I didn’t
