Normally I'd have rated a story like this 4 stars, but it gets the extra star because of just how much Sanderson was able to do with so few words. This guy cranks out some seriously long novels, so for him to write a standalone novel[la?] fewer than 200 pages in length, that's pretty much a "short story". For me to truly enjoy a short story, typically it has to be connected to something I'm already familiar with - characters or a setting from other books. Although there are some very minor connections to Sanderson's ELANTRIS (I'm told the two take place in the same world, but are otherwise not connected), I knew nothing about this book going into it, save for enjoying the author's work in finishing the late (and beloved) Robert Jordan's WHEEL OF TIME series. I really got sucked into the story and the characters of Shai and Gaotona early on, and this was a real page-turner. I enjoyed it. The tale was satisfying, but I wanted more because I enjoyed it so much. Excellent, excellent book!
