GREAT resource for beginners! I wish I had this book last spring. My garden wouldn't have been nearly so pathetic! I was going to give up after 2 years of garden failure, but now I want to try again.

Finally, a book about self-sufficiency that only focuses on suburbia! Great pictures, multiple points of view and opinions, and detailed personal experience makes this book a winner.

This book is great for the gardener with a black thumb, but hopes to improve their skills. Super helpful and sarcastically toned.

A great starter for how to set-up a suburban backyard homestead. I picked this one up mainly for the gardening portion, and while I skipped the chicken and goat chapters completely, the chapters on bees, preserving and DIY beauty and cleaning products were great primers.
Written by two friends, with two separate homesteads I enjoyed both their witty writing and the two different view points. One might love the process and one might prefer an easier get-er-done way for the same activity.
The general layout of the book and any accompanying images were helpful, though I would have loved the addition of seeing an overall layout of each homestead.
A great starter primer for many aspects of homesteading, a try-it and see-if-you-like-it approach that I found very accessible.

This book is an overview of what could be possible to accomplish in the suburbs as far as self-sufficient living. It's not particularly detailed, like it tells you that you may need to supplement a beehive's winter nutrition but not how to figure out if they need it, and an overview of hive disease but not how to tell if your hive is not thriving.
It's a good starting place for ideas, but you'd need a whole other set of resources to actually do any of the things in this book. Or it could be interesting if you're a year into some of these projects and need a little insight from someone who has lived it. The authors are encouraging and tell of their own experiences, which was interesting.

A little chipper for me but also really helpful! Very no-fear homesteading approach, which I appreciated a LOT especially the bees chapter.

An accessible, straight-forward book for people new to this stuff. Not the most in-depth or useful book for me.

This is a useful books for those just starting out home farming/gardening and urban or suburban homesteading. I didn't love the cutesy tone of this book but it did have a lot of great ideas and helpful info. Read my full review at my blog:
