When Rachel discovers that both her mom and her younger sister are witches, hijinks ensue as she attempts to use her sister's powers to better her own life.
All in all, this was a cute story, but I don't think I bother with the rest of the series.

This was funny and very believable. It made me think about what I would do if I suddenly found out there was magic in the world and I was part of it!

I remember loving this series when I was in seventh grade, and decided to give it a decade or so later reread.
Rachel is an engaging, funny narrator on a quest for popularity. She is very selfish, unpractical, and inconsiderate at time, but that is true to the nature of a self-absorbed fourteen year old girl. There are moments when she does show remorse for how she’s treating people, even if they are just quiet, fleeting thoughts. I also found it to be an interesting spin that Miri, her younger sister, is significantly more mature and self assured; I would love some more backstory on the girls growing up and on Miri’s life. Does she have friends beyond Rachel?
There were some areas that were lacking—for example, why exactly was Raf so instantly drawn to Rachel? Did Rachel’s dad really start seeing STB before breaking up with their mom? Is Jewel really a bad friend or is Rachel just completely exhausting to have as a friend? The Jewel and Rachel dynamic also seemed underdeveloped.
I look forward to hopefully seeing Rachel mature throughout the series.
3.5 stars.

I’ve missed this series. I love Rachel and Miri, and their sister bond is so realistic. They remind me a lot of my little sister and I. I can’t wait to reread book 2!
Also, Rachel, I have double d boobs, and it’s not fun. Want to trade?

The first in the book and it filled me with trepidation as I don't normally read books with witches and things in it. However it shocked me. The book was a quick read and flowed very easily. One of the first YA books that I have read in a long time that was a complete page turner. These 2 girls think that Miri being a witch is the best thing in the world and turn to magic to help them in their every day lives and sometimes (most of the time) the consequences are not what they expect. I can't wait for the next one in this series.

I am certainly not the target audience for this. I bet my students would love it though.

If you were 14 and you found out that your mom and sister were witches what would you wish for? Well Rachel wants popularity and her soon-to-be stepmother to disappear. But, will it go smoothly?
Sarah Mlynowski is a genius when it comes to having her narrator sound like a 14 year old girl, because Rachel is perfect! Not once did it sound like an author writing a 14 year old girl, she just sounded her age.
