Gross-out comedy, not horror. The ending comes out of nowhere and makes no sense at all and the characters are one dimensional. It’s hard to be truly horrified when you don’t give a stuff about any of the people involved.

This may be the best Ed Lee book I've read. Very entertaining!

Review originally published at http://www.lomeraniel.com/audiobookreviews/book-review-goon/

I was offered a free copy in audio format from the narrator in exchange for an honest review.

Goon is the king of the low category of wrestling. He is tall, strong, powerful and absolutely indestructible. But Goon has a secret, because he is also a serial killer. Reporter Melinda and inspector Straker will try to demonstrate that Goon is behind all the recent murders, but they may need need to cross a dangerous line.

There are not lots of books like 'Goon', and if you decide to go for it you will need either to like the genre or listen to it with an open mind. There are several scenes that many would considerate disgusting, but if I was able to eat lunch while listening to it, it is not something that you cannot stand. If you let go you will find yourself laughing hard at the grotesque images, and even accepting the mystic part of it.

The wrestling world is something completely unknown to me, and I had no idea about the ring rats culture. It was an interesting read in which I have learned something new, and the authors gave it the ultimate twist.

Joe Hempel was, as always, superb. He delivered the story in his very personal way, making you forget that you are listening to a book. I got immersed into the story and enjoyed the ride. He even had to burp! What I said, he is a professional, and he makes you believe in the story.
This was not my typical book but I enjoyed the vivid scenes and the great narration. Even if you are not into this kind of literature, I encourage you to try it, it will be a hoot, and it is just about three and a half hours.

I love Edward Lee. I love John Pelan. I love Goon. The wrestler names/monickers in this story were spot on, and kept me grinning through the entire read. What else? Blood/guts/violence/sex? Check.

And a ditch full of putrefactive effluvium.

This shit packs a punch! I have been a fan of Lee for a long time, and have to say, this was one of the most twisted of his stories I've read to date. Right up there with The Bighead and Teratologist! Not at all for the faint of heart or easily grossed out, we have some of the most depraved sex and gore here. Add to that a cool but somewhat predictable storyline, you have Goon. Can you guess whodunit?

This definitely isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea. Written by a master of the genre, this is transgressive literature with a capital T. The story delivers shocking violence and sex acts wrapped around a plot about a mysterious masked wrestler named Goon. It managed to reel me in and even made me chuckle at times. I look forward to checking out some of Lee's other works.

I'm not sure where to even really begin. At first I thought, "This book is do over the top sexually, violently, cliched, etc. that it was a worthless read". Then I stopped and took a breath. This is Edward Lee. He is a pro at this type of book so I was willing to overlook some things. I actually learned some things about a subject (wrestling) that I heretofore had no knowledge of. Granted, I didn't fact check any of this but some of it seemed plausible! The book progresses from a standard serial killer motif to a ridiculous supernatural serial killer motif. Along the way, we have copious amounts of exhaustive, over the top sexual descriptions. Also, we get educated in what Edward Lee actually thinks what people from the south are like. It is a little irksome as I am from the south and no one I know talks anything like he depicts. I am willing to let all that go to try to enjoy a quick paced, lite and satirically amusing read.
