Immediately jumped on Amazon to get the sequel and am probably now terrified of flies.

WAITING OUT WINTER, a small, slender volume from Thunderstorm Books' Elemental chapbook series is Kelli Owen's newest release. It packs a huge punch that belies its size, however, and is more deserving of your time than some books three times its size and two-thirds the price.

Nick and his hunting buddies come home from a couple weeks in the woods to find themselves immediately neck-deep in an apocalyptic situation created by the local government's inept and little-too-late response to a pest problem. The result is a town, and possibly greater surrounding area, under siege from a most-unexpected front. A fun read you should snap up if you get the chance, and a story I’d expect to see in a collection of Kelli’s short fiction. It’s an apocalyptic story without zombies, as impossible as that may sound these days, and more importantly, it’s a human story, with a fun and ironic twist at the end.

I'm sorry. I just couldn't get into this story. While the premise was good, the writing wasn't compelling.

This was a fun and fast story. Constantly filled with tension especially due to the fact that it was based on true events of humans screwing around with nature and causing more problems than good

I didn't care for this. It was only 74 pages (the rest of the pages were excerpts from 2 other books) but I still struggled to get through it. A pet peeve of mine are errors in books and there were far too many in this slim volume. I didn't find the story particularly well written nor very compelling.

The book was a fast read which actually made it better.

Interesting from a "then what" perspective.

Characters were ok, nothing spectacular. Entertainment value for the time spent was good.

Gross and creepy. One more reason to hate flies. I'm so glad Kelli Owen wrote a sequel because I really want to know what happens next!

If my son would've allowed it, I could've read this in one sitting. This apocalyptic story felt very real and will bring out the paranoia in the most secure individual.

"If there was any celebration of the final death, it was behind locked doors and plastic-covered windows, in small gatherings of survivors."

Those relentless pesky flies!

Imagine living in an apocalyptic world infested with tent worms and flies!

The flies are released by scientists and the government in the hope that they will destroy the tent worms that are destroying all the plant life, but the flies are infected with a deadly disease and one bite is a killer.

I love the small town setting and how it focuses on one family doing everything they can to protect each other, especially the children. There is a tension building, claustrophobic atmosphere as they all fear flies getting into the house, making sure everything is secure and they have enough food and supplies to survive.

There is more to this story , including too much would spoil it.

It had me on edge with worry for this little family.

I really enjoyed the creativity and perhaps an almost believable apocalyptic world. Because.... BUGS....lots and lots of BUGS!

I loved the ending (even made me chuckle) as I have 'The Hatch' and had an idea of what was possibly to come.

I had a blast reading this!
