Nicole "Cole" uprooted her whole life to be with her very Catholic/conservative boyfriend Patrick. Everything is going as planned until Patrick's "friend" Hawke moves into their house after being released from prison.

I HATE the cheating trope and there is no excuse for it. Ya, Patrick was a misogynistic jerk, but no one deserves to be so blatantly disrespected by their partner. If you want to be with someone else, then breakup with your bf! Ugh! It was also weird how she would just "play house" with Patrick in front of Hawke then become jealous when Hawke is around other women.

Hawke has recently been released from prison for
murder. He was convicted of driving under the influence and killing his best friend in a car accident. Only, that is not the whole story.
We get the impression that he is this bad boy who does nothing but bang random women and do drugs with his vagrant friends. But really he is a broken and sad boy who has endured so much loss, trauma, and pain.
He has never truly been loved or respected by anyone. He has always been looked down apon or cast aside.
All he really wants is for someone to love and understand him, his rough exterior is nothing but a mask.

Cole is a lost woman. She thinks that she has a good life. Sure Patrick is a bit of a misogynistic ass, but he loves and takes care of her. As her relationship with Hawke grows she realizes how truly blind she has been. Patrick sees her as an accessory to creating this picture perfect life. He never consults her on any decisions, gaslights her, and completely disrespects her.

Overall, she was very judgemental and childish. Unfortunately, there wasn't much growth to her character. She spent the whole time whining about how she was cheating on her "perfect" boyfriend with Hawke, but never did anything to change the situation....

Patrick
it turns out is a wolf in sheep's clothing. He was the one who killed Hawkes best friend. He then fled the scene and pinned it on Hawke. Hawke not only lots his best friend, but he was then forced to take the fall for his death. At least Patrick got what was coming to him.

A few things - I really wish this had been dual POV. That would have added so much to the story. The writing was ok, but the story did drag and become very repetitive (Especially with Cole reprimanding herself that the cheating is wrong and her talking about Hawkes lip ring -mentioned 1000x). I felt like we didn't really dig deep enough into the characters and they felt a bit one dimensional.

Tropes: enemies to lovers, opposites attract, cheating, taboo, roommates, force proximity

Jescie Hall became one of my favorites after I read That Sik Luv. I couldn't wait to read more. I finally got around to reading this one.

It has some dark themes in it, which I would expect. but it has fantastic character building, which is one of the reasons I love her writing.

Nicole (nik/cole) and Patrick are the church going family. She moved with him to the small town where his family lives. They are not the picture perfect Catholics by any means. And they almost come across more like a mafia.

When Hawke gets out of prison, he moves in as a roommate, and there is a lot that comes to light when he does.

Some great steam 4.5 and wonderful writing. 4.5 rounded down. I am very stingy with my 5 stars.

I mean it was a good book. Single pov only Nic’s no hawke pov and I usually like having the mmc pov but oh well. Also Hawke was an actually a sweet mmc like the whole book was honestly pretty vanilla tbh. The scene in the car when they’re on x is actually pretty hot tho loll.

The book does get annoying and repetitive at some point tho, like it kept being “oh i can’t do this but i can’t stay away blablabla” over and over but its was still kinda entertaining? Also it gets really corny when they finally admit their love or wtv. And I feel like their backgrounds could be a bit more developed like idk i felt like I didn’t really know them even at the end?
But honestly overall pretty good book.

“You’re my calm in the soul, crazy in the flesh,”

The chemistry between the two MCs was undeniable... and HOT! As a sucker for the dark, tatted, brooding, tortured soul type, Hawke (MMC) had me from the very beginning. He was SO misunderstood and my heart ached for him. As the story progresses, we learn more about his past and how it shaped the way he interacts with the world. As his relationship progresses with Cole, we start to see the man behind the trauma. He may be brooding but he's also passionate, protective, adorably romantic and cuddly, and even sexier once ALL of his layers are revealed.

Cole (FMC) was guilty of misunderstanding Hawke at first too. She judged the book by it's cover and was reluctant to consider she might be wrong. Soon though, the sexual tension between the two opened doors that allowed her to see more than most others would. She fully accepted that she'd made assumptions, allowed Hawke to show her who he truly was, and accepted and loved him all the more for it in the end. Both deserved to find passion and happiness and I absolutely adored them as a couple.

I normally hate the cheating trope but I'll make an exception for this one. The book was the perfect balance between an intense, roller coaster plot and hot, hot spice... and I ate it up!
