I listened to the audiobook version and as a Ghanaian i was stunned at the amount of mispronunciation and supposed “accent” of Efe and her family. You would think they will put more effort to get it right.

Anyway, this book had me frustrated at the lack of communication between Sam and Efe. It does a good job highlighting the pressure from families in Ghana on a young woman to get married and have kids and all the struggles that comes with that.

Also what was that ending omg?? i was so annoyed at how the book ended

I didn’t know anything about this book going in and I’m glad. This book broke my heart.
Efe was let down so badly by those around her. She spoke about her challenges and then she was robbed of her life just as it was finally beginning.
Life is a treasure and you have to hold on to the best parts of it.

The ending was so sad but it also was a bit of a cop out in terms of dealing with the main conflict of the novel. I think the discussion around not wanting to be a mother was good but could have had more nuance and complexity, same thing with Sam and his relationship was his mother
Just generally there was a lot of interesting plot events that could have been explored more, which is a pity

The writing was really good but I didn’t really understand why the book took some turns it did.
I also didn’t really agree with its perspective on motherhood. I honestly expected some sort of character growth? Or more insight on Efe’s mental health space.

Was Efe’s death necessary???? Bruh
