4 stars = I loved it!

I read this book because it was for a class (I get to meet her tonight *dies*), but Nye is genuinely one of my favorite poets. I'm boring because my favorites are Shoulders and Kindness, but also don't make me pick a favorite.

Although a good chunk of these poems deal with pretty heavy topics (the decades-long conflict in Palestine, for example), Nye does a wonderful job at instilling hope and finding little moments to celebrate joy in even the darkest of poems.

This book is aimed at children and high schoolers, but it's fully enjoyable for adults (or children) of any age too.

The author was able to beautifully combine child-like wonder and innocence with heart-wrenching stories and experiences.

I read this collection over the course of a few days and each part surprised me. This poet has a way of creating such a balance between lighthearted childhood silliness and heart wrenching specificity of the Palestinian experience. During a time of great pain, these poems were a comfort.

I’ve loved her poetry for years! This anthology has a few poems that I used to use in the classroom and so many others that I hadn’t read before. This book is geared towards Middle Grade readers, but it’s truly for any age!
