Tender Trap was okay at best, however Aftermath was basically the same book, just different names!

This is two novellas wrapped into one book, each about a brother. The first novella is about Denver returning to reclaim his uncle's ranch after his demise. Eager to sell and return back to California as fast as he can, Denver crosses paths, and opinions, with Tessa, one of the ranch managers and his ex love. Their proximity brings on a slew of complexities and draws their attraction to each other. The second half of the book focuses on Colton. His return from Ireland leads to him helping out on the ranch while his shoulder begins healing. After their prized stallion goes missing, Colton approaches Cassie and her father, their bitter rivals, blaming them for the horse theft. Stunned at his sudden appearance and accusations, Cassie confronts Colton about the missing stallion and their past, complicated history together.
For both stories, the plot is very basic and holds little to no way to keep the reader involved in the mystery/intrigue. Overall, the characters have such complex back stories but there is not really any development for them and they mostly fall flat. I am also not a fan of the pregnancy trope and how it was portrayed in both stories. The big reveal is only at the very end of the stories, with no suspicion or clues leading up to it, making the conclusion just that.... A simple ending.
I also found both female MCs to be whiny and annoying, Cassie even moreso than Tessa. (03/2024)

I'm not normally a fan of so much romance but the mysteries kept me reading. Very good book.

When the whole first half of the story is about who started a fire that killed two people and the culprit ends up getting a free pass, literally ZERO consequences, there's no way I'm wasting time on the last half.

I DNF'd this shortly after starting. Just wasn't my writing style. This was my first time reading a Lisa Jackson novel. I gave it a solid try, but couldn't get through it. It may be because it's an older novel and reads like that.
