A dark, creative, and entertaining retelling of seven classic fairy tales. I loved how each story was told from a new perspective and even added new twists to the stories. My favorite story in the book was a retelling of Jack and the Bean Stock, which was told from the magic harp's point of view. Overall, the entire book was a quick read and had beautiful artwork for each story.

When I picked up this collection, I was thinking dark and morbid but it was not as dark as I thought. More sad than dark. My favorite story was "Ashes", a Cinderella retelling from the Prince's perspective. The collection is lush and filled with beautiful pictures.

Recommend to fans of fairy tales.

I absolutely love it when authors do a re-telling of fairytales, and this book is no exception.

The stories were sweet and haunting and a lot darker than I expected. Most are the same story, but retold from another character's point of view. Snow White is told from the point of view of one of the dwarves. Jack and the Beanstalk (one of my favorites) was retold from the point of view of the magical harp. Like Grimm's fairytales, some of these stories are definitely not meant for kids, or even teenagers.

For anyone who is a fan of folktales, fairy tales, etc., I highly recommend this book to add to their collection.

Good collection of fairy tale retellings. Published as adult, OK for older teens (the last 2 stories are on the mature side). Jack and the Beanstalk from the harp's point of view and other unique perspectives on familiar stories.

Fairly interesting, although a bit darker than I usually read. However, it was a bit inappropriate at times.

This book was very well written. Hawes has a changeable style that works really well for a book of short fairy tales. Each story has a completely different feel. My major issue with this book was that it was SO depressing. I know it says dark, but it was just so much dark. There were only two stories in this book that had remotely happy endings. I feel like I would have enjoyed these stories more if they were mixed into a bigger anthology with some more happy. My favorite of the stories from this book was the retelling of Jack the Giant Killer from the harp's perspective. That was very unique.
