He has quite a bit of clever phrasing and some lovely use of language. However, I just find myself completely disinterested in what happens to the characters. I only made it halfway through before I just got bored reading it.

"Good God, man! do you mean to go to your death with nothing but jokes upon your lips? Do you know that this is a serious matter?"
"How can I know that? I have never been dead in all my life. I have heard that death is a serious matter, but never from any of those who have experienced it."
From Parker Adderson, Philosopher

Quoting the back of the collection, I so agree with Clifton Fadiman. "Bierce will remain one of our great wits, one of our most uncompromising satirists, the perfecter of the two or three new genres.

Almost every short story that Ambrose Bierce wrote took me by surprise, with most of the stories leaving me awed and shocked. I even had to re-read some of the short stories to make sure what I read the first time was correct. It still left me awed and shocked as the first time. I have only read one of his short stories in the past, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge and I remembered after my astonishment I wanted to read more of this author's work. Upon re-reading of that story I still appreciated his writing. I am glad that I have read most to all of his stories but now I want more, so in time I will pick up this collection again to re-read these amazing tales.
The collection I read from had three parts; part I: The world of Horror; part II: The world of War; part III: The world of Tall Tales.
