Neftali lives under the watchful eye of his domineering father who wants him to grow out of his childhood fancies and become a successful doctor or businessman. But Neftali doesn't want that. He loves being outside and discovering the beauty of nature and encountering the power of words in books which draws him to write poems of his own. Even under the pressure put on him by his father Neftali pushes through and goes on to become one of the most well-known poets of all time, Pablo Neruda.

I love this author, Pam Muñoz Ryan, who wrote my favorite book of all time, Esperanza Rising. I have read many of her other works before but never this one and so when I saw it in the library I decided it was time to give it a try. Poetry has never been a favorite of mine and I guess I'd always expected this book to be full of it but it wasn't. Instead this book turned out to be an inspiring story of the childhood of the poet, Pablo Neruda. Before reading this book I didn't even know there was a poet named Pablo Neruda and that's why I love books so much. They cause you to learn so much about the world in such fun ways! I loved the support Neftali's family and others in his life gave to him as well as encouraging him not to give up on his dreams even though his father seemed intent on crushing them at every turn. And Neftali didn't give up. He kept writing and thinking and dreaming with whatever the world offered him. I encourage you to give this book a try, or any book written by [a:Pam Muñoz Ryan|1244538|Pam Muñoz Ryan|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1602805360p2/1244538.jpg]! She is an incredible author who has never disappointed me. Happy Reading :)

This was a beautiful and poetic story of Pablo Neruda as a child. I think it’s a great intro for kids about the power of poetry and using our voices and writing to change the world. My only complaint is that I wish there was more- I wanted more! I loved the author’s note at the end where she explained her process and purpose for writing this book. And it made me want to go find some Pablo Neruda poetry to dive into.

This was a really enjoyable read. I loved the diverse representation in the characters and Neftali was such a likeable MC. The story was fast paced and it was nice to find out at the end that it was based on the life a real poet. I will be looking for more audiobooks by this author
