OMGGGG IT WAS SOOOOO GOOOOOODDD!!!!
Andy Serkis reading it made it even better.
I need him to read all the other books, please, how do we make this happen, who do I have to contact!!!
As this was my first time it was super overwhelming.
If it is your first time or if you have read it before I HIGHLY recommend watching "Voices of Geekdom" Youtube Playlist on the Silmarillion. He gives a super comprehensive VERY EASY to understand chapter by chapter explanation and analysis. SERIOUSLY pictures help SO MUCH! pictures and maps and family trees.
Unfortunately he only does them up to CH 18 and then stopped for some reason.
I had to google family trees myself, I had to google maps, seriously, I have never studied this hard for a book series.
AND I WANT MORE!
I can't wait to read Beren and Luthien, Children of Hurin, Fall of Gondolin, Fall of Numenor and there's a TON more books being re-released this year for Chistopher Tolkien's 100th Birthday.
Definitely recommend reading if you want further information on the History of Middle Earth (just skip the beginning chapters like the intro and preface cause they were super boring I'm sorry).

Great book recounting the rich history and construction of Middle Earth and how it came to be. Highly recommend listening to an audio performance while you read or you can feel like you are slugging through a particularly dense and dull history book "and Fandol, son of Findol, son of Finlay, son of Fandolian"

After several false starts over the years, I finally finished the Silmarillion! It helped to read the foreword by Tolkien's son, which really helped me understand the origin abd history of the stories themselves.
I love the richness of Tolkien's world, but sometimes the lists of names and geneologies got a bit old. I'm glad I read it. I would read the first two books, about the creation of the world, again--I've liked them since the first reading attempts--but the Silmarillion itself may be too dense for me.

The Tolkien nerd in me was definitely intrigued by the lore of Middle Earth, although it can be tiring at times, since the book resembles an Elvish encyclopaedia. I also wish the book makes it more explicit that it is a collection of tales written by various Elvish historians, which we only find out in the appendix. However, I am still impressed by the scale and details of Tolkien’s universe.
