Taking into consideration the genre and my expectations, this was a good story. I enjoyed it, for the most part. It's predictable; it follows a familiar formula. Its flaws were the typical ones that I expected; too much male dominance, too much sex, and all of that. I was entertained—and that was the important part.

As a feminist and a romance reader, I can sometimes suspend my disbelief when it comes to some things. But this book is a mess. And has not aged well, the main male character almost never calls the FMC by her actual name, it is almost always “wife” or “mate”. And there is some very dubious consent happening that I was not a fan of.

I actually though this book was pretty unique. It had the basic You Jane, Me Tarzan that accompanies Vampire books, but I really liked all the action and suspense.

However.....

Cara annoyed the ever loving hell out of me. She was the stupidest scientist I’ve ever read about. She pushed and fought the hero only to cause more work for everyone over and over and over again.

Where to start... this book irritated me on many levels. Mostly the main characters. Talen is a chauvinistic jerk who thinks it's okay to force a woman to marry him after just meeting her. Cara apparently knows his treatment of her is horrible but never really stands up for herself. Every time she slightly speaks out he manipulates her with sex. Which is concerning.

When her sister asks her if he forced her to mate with her she says "no".
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!
He blackmailed her into marriage and even though she repeatedly said no he still had sex with her. I don't care if she liked it in the end or that they were "Fated" to be together, consent was at the very least dubious.

I really couldn't get into this book. I had to put it down in anger several times. The world building was okay, but the characters left much to be desired. And I never thought I'd say this, but there is such a thing as to much sex in a book. It got old and repetitive.

What on earth did I just read?
I rant didn't expect much from this, but I sure didn't get it. It's this a man writing under a pseudonym? The overwhelming alpha male bull is just shockingly horrible. I am not sure how this author can write so well and yet this book is SO BAD.
Plot holes you could sail the Titanic through, stupid heroines, even dumber villains, insanely controlling hero,.. It just goes on and on. This book was a train wreck the whole way through. Read it if you're in the mood to laugh.

Edit: So apparently this was so bad that I blocked it from my memory because I accidentally read it again and nothing seemed familiar, but the above review is still quite accurate.

2.75 - A lot of potential, but not well done. I have heard it gets better with each book, I hope so. I may take another look at this series at a later date.
