Short story collection that I picked up in a charity shop in order to read specific stories in it:
Poe's The Pit and the Pendulum - a very simple tale but effective in its grim horror.

The Inn by Guy de Maupassant - snow-bound story of madness in the mountains. Decent but not immensely gripping.

The Monkey's Paw by WW Jacobs - classic wish-fulfilment with a dark twist set-up. Best story in the book.

The Judge's House by Bram Stoker - fairly typical gothic haunting story, not going to stay with me for long.

Count Magnus by MR James - meh.

The Festival by HP Lovecraft - weird but standard HP storytelling: "it was so horrific I can't describe it..." You're a writer, man! Describe the damn horror!
