While I was familiar with the impact and cultural role of this novel, this was the first time I actually had to read it, and I must say it was much more impactful, particularly in its use of language, and much more thoughtful than I expected it to be.

This is without question one of the best and most moving books I have read. It is a clear and unflinching description of World War I from the perspective of a young German soldier. It addresses the horrors of war, the camaraderie felt by the soldiers, the awareness they gain of how senseless it all is, and the fact that, as a generation, they will be lost afterwards because the war is where they grew to adulthood. Both the writing and the sentiment carried from the author reminded me of [b:The Things They Carried|133518|The Things They Carried|Tim O'Brien|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1297915473s/133518.jpg|1235619] and other books by [a:Tim O'Brien|2330|Tim O'Brien|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1232136886p2/2330.jpg], which is both high praise and a testament to the darkness and emotions of the book. This is now, without question, one of my favorite books.

I found the story very moving and real in a way I wasn’t quite ready for. I wasn’t sure if it was historical fiction or written by someone who had been there and the more I read, the more certain I was that Remarque had experienced this himself (he had). The first half seemed to bounch back and forth between the front line and the break the soldiers got between their turns at the front. The stark differences between the two were very well done and showed how brutal conditions were for those fighting. I thought Remarque wrote beautifully about the feelings Paul and his comrades had while fighting and I found it all very moving.

I am hontesly finding this hard to word myself. Maybe motsly as this book is not super engraving so I bearly rember wht I even read anymore. It was a god and pleasent quick read. But also it was super easy to forget for me.

I don't know what happened in this book but it was depressing and well written. 5/5.
