O to víc mě to čtení bavilo.

SPOILER REVIEW*******

This is a choppy compilation of my thoughts because I just want to highlight my analyzation of the series as a whole and the end of Supernova.

I find that this book was enjoyable to read. The characters were interesting and I was invested in the storyline. I didn’t find anything particularly special about the series that stood out to me, but I do think it was a nice read.
Overall I think Meyer is a good writer. Each character had personality and the world building was fine, but Meyer’s strength is in the protagonist characters. All of the crew on the Rampion of the Lunar chronicles are a great example of this. They’re all obviously the people you’re rooting for and they are very likable. The same goes for Adrien who is always dependable and caring. Nova and Adrien are not weak characters by any means due to Meyer’s ability to write interesting characters. Still, the point of this book is about the grey area between the good and bad. Though Nova is an Anarchist, it’s clear that she is not much of an Anti-hero. She’s likable and lacks moral ambiguity. It seems like other Anarchists are more morally ambiguous, but they aren’t explored much. Their reasoning, their past, and they dark side is not explored as extensively as I would have liked (only kind of with Winston, but it’s not as personable). Instead, Nova is put up as a cunning liar who is so terrible in the eyes of the Renegades. In the end, all those who are even remotely devious are killed off and never mentioned again.

As for the relationship, I see little chemistry between Adrian and Nova in the first book and I have no idea why Adrian even liked her. She’s so reserved that he hardly learns anything about her and it makes me question what he was so intrigued by. It's forced and convenient for the plot. By the second book, Nova feels more secure and opens up a little. While I found myself liking Adrian a lot, I never got attached to Nova. I still rooted for her, but her character fell flat for me. This was especially apparent when she would say to herself over and over that the Renegades betrayed her and the “vengeance will be mine” speal (rolled my eyes a lot). After a while, it got very repetitive and annoying. There needed to be more showing and less insistent telling.

Anyway, here are my final thoughts on the end of Supernova. Though I found the book to be nice, the conclusion frustrated me. The entire point of the book is that there is no good or evil and there is a distinct middle area to people and their actions. Nova doesn’t feel like a strong representation of this since by the end of the book, she is clearly on the side of “good” and always has been in my mind. At the end of the book I was very ticked off by the portrayal of Ace. Nova has idolized him for the whole book since he is the uncle who took her in. Yes, we see this man going into a selfish, vengeful path, but he was still humanized. He took on the role of caring uncle and had a vision for the future that one could understand even if they don’t agree with it. He merely wanted to help prodigies. In the end, it is predictably revealed that he killed his brother and completely betrays Nova. Nova was going to make the tough decision to take away her uncles powers. In her mind he still cared for her, and this would have made a stronger and more emotional conclusion. Instead, Ace is complete antagonized. Any aspect of humanity that was previously build up is complete stripped away and Captain Chromium is put on a pedestal. I thought this twist was unnecessary and took away from the overall message of the books. The whole idea is that these people are in the grey area. In this book, there are often very distinct sides each person is on. Instead of letting Ace, the ultimate antagonist, be a person, he is made into an archetype. The reveal makes the ending weak.

Still, there were two reveals I found to be very intriguing. First, the reveal of how Adrian created Phobia was really interesting. It was so horrible in its twisted irony that I sat gaping in my seat for a while. Also, the epilogue with the reveal of how Magpie is Nova’s sister was also interesting. Her perspective was a good way to end the book and attempt to mask the very happy ending with pessimism and the reminder of anarchy’s effect. So though I had issues with this series, I still like Meyer and see the strengths in her writing.

I loved the Lunar chronicles, but was a let down with this one. I give all of it three stars—not horrible, not great.
