I could not get into the writing style or the narrative voice of this book.

I may return to this at some point, I had just read another by this author that was a polar themed so I think I need a break.
The main character is also slightly annoying so it isn’t helping me move along quickly.

Great characters, extraordinary location descriptions/atmosphere, creepy mystery, danger and disaster. There was a young trans character as the main character that well written as he found his true self in this horrific tale.
This was a dark tragedy exploration to the Antarctic. Late travel to the Weddell Sea was just the beginning of the disastrous journey. Weather, light, food, muttany, and a possible paranormal unknown all want them dead it seems.
I loved it, the story, it was the slow pacing of the story that took some of the joy away. The middle part of the book seemed to take forever to get through. There was too much inner dialog for this reader. The beginning and the end was thrilling. The end, frustraiting ! I needed a couple more pages, to know if it was real, there was a lot of imagining going on.

A haunting and compelling horror story with Jonathan's personal journey as the centerpiece. Jonathan being a trans man and having that impact the story in countless ways was what made the novel for me.

3.5 stars. Absolutely flew through the first 200 or so pages, but then it kind of stuttered after that...even past the point where it starts to get spooky. Maybe it's just me but it was hard to follow what was actually happening in places.
But it is very atmospheric & definitely heavily reminiscent of The Terror. I don't agree with the comparisons to The Thing - yes there are passing similarities but the vibe is completely different.

I really really really wanted to like this. I love queer horror and this seemed like exactly what I’ve been trying to read. But oh my gosh I was so incredibly bored. I kept thinking “okay once I hit 20% the pace will pick up”. It did not. The plot is probably about to actually start but I just can’t make myself keep going.
Graphic: Grief, Violence, Injury/Injury detail, Transphobia, Animal cruelty, and Fire/Fire injury
Moderate: Animal death, Death, Dysphoria, and Vomit
Minor: War and Alcohol
