The beginning of it was very simple and felt a bit too juvenile, but from the half point onwards, it started being more engaging and interesting, hence the rating. It was an okay read, but I'm salty about not reading it at a point in my life when I would have appreciated it more, because magical it still remains.

Any good children's book comes with an innocence which (like all forms of Innocence) can't be put into words. Travers' Mary Poppkins comes with her spoonful of sugar has this this sort of innocence. Its beauty is not something you would decode (and later try to mass produce (like so much of YA fiction)but is more like that of a flower to be loved and not to analysed.

The book does make use of what looks like magic realism to keep attention of children but except for that the book is fully realistic - specially beautiful in the way it captures attention of Adullt-young relationship and the ability to see things from child's point of view. If you were a parent and wanted a book to read your kids, this one should be your first choice.

I think I first read this in college, then I read it again to my kids, and over the past week or two I’ve listened to Sophie Thompson narrate the audiobook. It never disappoints. It’s especially good as an audiobook because Thompson is remarkably versatile as a narrator— there are so many distinct voices that after awhile I checked to make sure it was just one narrator (it is). and also the chapters are episodic- there is only a slight over-arching plot, each chapter is a separate adventure. So it’s easy and fun to listen to as you are running errands or whatever. Highly recommended.

I'm going to be a bit grouchy here but Mary Poppins was a lot more dippy and sporadic than I expected. Yes, it's a children's book. Still, most young fiction maintains some appeal for the rest of the family. This book lacked an overall story arc. Mary Poppins appears. A series of unrelated, non-thematic and silly events happen. The children remain the same. The parents' lives are unchanged. Then Mary Poppins disappears with the changing of the wind.

Alternatively, one can clearly see the how this fits into a similar tradition as Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan—no coincidence all 3 were turned into films by Walt Disney. Further, the Disney picture is better than the book(s), finding a way to preserve the magic of Mary Poppins while reaching deeper into the hearts and minds of older folks.

I can't say much beyound the fact that I am quite confused. I know the story progressed in such a mystical way for some reason and that we must accept it but I am lost on that reason. Yet I can't help but feel gratified at the ending regardless. Moreover, the accepting the madness or rolling with the adventure seems to be a reacurring theme in these classics such as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. As much as I'd like to read that one for the fun, I kinda hope it is not like Mary Poppins. Or maybe it is that I wasn't expecting Mary Poppins to be quite, well- Mary Poppins. At times she seemed quite stern and forceful with the children then she would become a little more docile and in the chapter with Bert, she seemed a whole nother person..odd very odd
