Nick Heller is a specialist private investigator. When the teenage daughter of his billionaire friend Marshall Marcus is kidnapped, he is asked to help. Alexa disappeared from a Boston nightclub and is now being held in a coffin ten feet underground at an unknown location. Her captors are exceptionally ruthless and her situation has been designed to be as horrific as possible. As the title implies, Nick quickly learns that Marshall Marcus and the people around him all have dark secrets which they are determined to keep hidden.

This is a solid thriller that unfolds at a relentless pace. One of those books you don't want to put down - lots of short chapters with cliff hanger endings to keep you up reading far later than you intended. While there are no major twists, nor is it clear what will happen or how things will be resolved and the ending is genuinely suspenseful. Heller makes a good hero - resourceful and capable, but no superman. Yes, there are some plot elements that lack originality and some of the characters are paper thin (a secretary named "Smoki Bacon" was a particularly jarring note), but overall this is a superior holiday thriller.

This is a sequel to Vanished (Nick Heller 1), but it's not necessary to have read the first book.

Nice follow-up to the first book. Kept some characters I really liked and added a few more. It was another intense mystery and I enjoyed listening to it a great deal.

Nick Heller is back! I read Buried Secrets within a couple of weeks of finishing Vanished and I have to say that this second book in the Nick Heller series is much more intense. In this instalment, Nick Heller is searching for Alexa, the kidnapped daughter of billionaire and family friend Marshall Marcus. The reasons for the kidnapping are not clear and Nick is not getting the information he should from Alexa’s father.

Nick’s characteristic sense of humour (I got strange looks on the bus because I kept snickering as I read) is still present in this novel but the overall feeling of urgency makes you want to plow through the remaining pages to find out what happens. Alexa is being kept under some pretty horrific conditions which allows for some pretty gruesome scenes. In Buried Secrets, Nick Heller’s is conflicted as ever as he deals with some pretty nasty characters and a woman from his past and, like in Vanished, some of Nick’s investigative efforts lead him to uncover some questionable government deals.

Buried Secrets is another fast-paced, enjoyable thriller full of suspense from Joseph Finder. I’m looking forward to reading his other stand alone books.

My first Joseph Finder book, but most definitely will not be my last. He's moved up on my audiobook wishlist on Simply Audio and on the WWBL.
The main character in this book, Nick Heller, is intriguing. he works for who he wants to work for, turns down investigative work for those he doesn't care for. This time he's hired to find the daughter of an old friend, billionaire Marshall Marcus. She's been kidnapped and buried alive and Marshall will do anything to get her back. But he's hiding more than he's telling and it hinders Nick's investigation.
Nick has ways of finding out what he needs to though.
Supremely paced and I found myself sitting in the car for just one more chapter....
Definite recommend.

Really enjoyed the second Nick Heller book as well as the first one, maybe more. The plot was suspenseful and I enjoy the characters. They're realistic and relatable, and you can feel their emotions as you read. I always like books that have some element of the FBI in them, and that combined with the break-all-the-rules toughness of the main character made this a win for me. I'm going to read more by this author.

Good book! I like the Nick Heller series and I'm never disappointed with Joseph Finder's books. Good action, but did leave things hanging a bit at the end.

After the damn slog that was the second Locke Lamora book, this was a nice change. It's just as dumb as the first one. But once you get over the desire to shout "That's not how that works!" a few times and put your brain into hibernation you're ready to enjoy it. Things happen, they happen fast and it's best to just go with the flow instead of looking for realism. Heller has an endless source of favors and highly capable friends and acquaintances which allows him to save the day once more, of course. And sometimes that kind of book is just what I need.

Buried Secrets is a fairly expected forray into smash-and-grab thrillers, and won't dissapoint if you're looking for a summmer beach read or poolside thrill ride. Don't expect anything deeper than that.
