GABE is a great addition to the series and it keeps the action, suspense, and romance going. I love that this series takes place almost a year after the invasion; this means that the characters have already settled into accepting a new way of life and are now ardently fighting back. This was a fast paced read and Gabe and Emerson have a fiery chemistry that kept me quickly turning the pages.

Emerson is one tough heroine and her dedication to helping others has been her whole life. She puts her heart and soul into caring for others and she desperately wants to help Gabe find peace and closure. Even after being kidnapped and beaten up by aliens in the last book, Emerson refuses to let it get in the way of doing her job and she continues to go out with Hell Squad and help with survivors. Emerson's feelings for Gabe have always been there but when he starts visiting her in the dark of night she finds an unexpected connection, if only Gabe would open up about losing his brother.

Gabe is the strong, silent type and he's not used to expressing his emotions. He's still dealing with guilt and grief over his twin brother's death and though Emerson provides the only peace he knows he doesn't know how to tell her that. While he struggles with words, he finds a way to show his feelings by leaving little gifts for Emerson and I loved this tender side to his character. I would have liked more about Gabe's history in the experimental military program which is hinted at but not fully developed. Gabe himself doesn't completely know all of what was done to him so I understand the lack of backstory but I was really hoping for more because I think it's a fascinating idea.

I also liked the brief look at a new squad, the Berserkers -- I think their name speaks for itself and I'm certainly intrigued and hope we'll get some books about them.

As it did every time he was with her, that tight, hot ball of pain, rage and grief that lived inside him shrunk, easing back a little and letting him breathe.

As with its predecessor, more action than romance. The actual plot is moving along very slowly, but there are plenty of action scenes and a couple of sex scenes, and a lot of set-ups for subsequent books - pretty much par for the course.

Can I have my own Gabe?

How can anyone NOT fall in love with Gabe. He’s strong, deadly, and secretly a teddy bear. The pebbles he gives Emerson remind me of how crows leave shiny trinkets to show affection, a sweet gesture showing how much he cares, even though he doesn’t say it. Though the story is action packed and fast paced, I enjoy the love story in this one the best.

Enjoyed. Wish the female lead had a little more self respect ... but at least there was no cheesy kiss while guns are going off, and lives are at risk, ha.
Full review to come.

I started this right after Cruz, it was teased so well and broody Gabe was adorable in a scary way, it was nice to see him get his happy ending with Emerson (ha! I remembered her name). I really liked how this book developed the world and some extremely eerie threats are revealed, and the seeds for future books are planted perfectly. Seriously though... Book SEVEN for Claudia and Shaw? Seriously?!

I barely got started on this book before I DNFed it. It would be fair to say that I didn’t give this book and these MCs a chance to win me over and I’m sad since I liked the glimpses I saw of them in book 2 but I hate starting a book when the MCs have already had sex with each other. It feels like I’m jumping in somewhere in the middle of a romance book and missed out. I didn’t like the first on-page sex scene (occurred within the first 25mins of the audiobook) and feel no drive to listen any further.

Hell Squad member Gabe Jackson has lost the last thing that mattered to him, his twin brother. Now he is hellbent on killing all the aliens no matter the cost. Dr. Emerson Green is the head of the medical team for the Blue Mountain base. She frequently patches up the soldiers, especially Hell Squad. She never planned to fall for the sexy and broadening Gabe, who refuses to open up.

“Loving a woman twists you up. Makes you do some pretty idiotic things. God, it can even make you afraid...But it’s worth every second.” - Marcus

This book was just packed with action, suspense, and romance. Gabe is the strong, silent type who doesn’t know how to express his emotions. He is struggling to deal with the grief and guilt over the death of his brother. The only time he finds peace is when he is with Emerson. Gabe may be a quiet one but he shows he cares by leaving little gifts for Emmerson. I do wish we had learned more about the experiments done on him in the military because it is all so fascinating.

“As it did every time he was with her, that tight, hot ball of pain, rage and grief that lived inside him shrunk, easing back a little and letting him breathe.”

Emerson has been dedicated to helping others her whole life. She is smart, tough, and compassionate. She puts everything she is into helping others, including Gabe, that she forgets to take care of herself. Even after being kidnapped by aliens she still goes out on missions with Hell Squad to save as many people as she can. The biggest thing I liked about her though was that she doesn’t try to change Gabe. She lets him open up to her in his own way and doesn’t force him to talk all his feelings out.

“I don’t expect you to turn into a talker. I just want you to be yourself.”

As for the aliens in this book, they are continuing the experiments on humans. A new lab is found and more horrors are discovered inside. This just makes Hell Squad, and the rest of the survivors, even more determined to stop the aliens. Also new aliens are introduced in this one, flying kinds this time.

“You gotta take the good when you can get it. Helps you shake off the bad.” - Reed

Overall, Gabe is a wonderful addition to the series. I cannot wait to learn more about the other squad, especially the Berserkers, which I think their name speaks for itself.

Trigger Warnings: death of a sibling, grief, human experimentation, euthanasia
