I just fly through these books, Michael Connelly has truly mastered the art of the police procedural. I remember reading book one of this series and thinking it was just ok, and it's amazing to see his growth throughout the series.
This one really feels like he wants to hold on to Harry though, he can't let the man retire. But it's time, men who were in the Vietnam War should be retired by now (and by the time this book was written). I really enjoyed the two simultaneous investigations - and I can't wait to read the Renee Ballard books.

Another great Bosch detective story by Michael Connelly. This time there are two old opened unsolved cases he and his newly promoted detective partner, Soto, have to solve. The character of Bosch seems to not be slowing down even though he is just months away from retirement. Bosch always seems to get himself in trouble as well.
The Burning Room audiobook, being a later book in the series is narrated by the wonderful actor who plays him on the TV show Bosch, Titus Welliver. He keeps a good pace with his narration. I am sure to read and listen to more of the books in the series.

You cant get more real than this. No exaggerated acts of valor. No championing of a cause. This is how a detective would investigate a case. In one word AUTHENTIC

This is the first of the Bosch stories I've read, in fact it's the first Connelly. Actually, I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed it. The writing was exciting, the characters believeable. Many times, the narrator can make or break an audiobook... and this one was tops.
Now I need to find more at my library.

Can this series get any better? I never wanted to put the book down at times. The twist and turns through the book and working multiple cases and angles like never before. I'm jumping right into the next book right away.

Harry Bosch is a member of the Open Unsolved unit, and is paired with Lucy Soto, a young woman newly made detective, with everything that the brass can use to burnish their reputations: Latine, and a former patrol cop who came out of a gun battle successfully.
He’s her mentor and shows her what he thinks makes a good detective: someone strongly motivated by justice for victims, and who’ll dig hard and question until they find the truth.
The book opens with the death of a mariachi player who has finally succumbed to the injuries he received ten years earlier at an public street event when he was shot. The brass is eager for a resolution to what is now a murder case, once the bullet lodged for years in the man’s spine is extracted. The mayor complicates things by offering a large reward for new information.
Harry and Lucy begin reviewing the murder book, and chasing down people and leads on this cold case. Harry soon discovers that Lucy is conducting her investigation simultaneously, of another cold case, in which she and other children and their carer in a daycare were the victims of a fire. No one was ever found responsible, but Harry agrees to help her.
While chasing leads on their primary case and the daycare fire, they realize there is a connection to yet another cold case: an unsolved robbery which occurred the same time as the daycare fire.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable entry in this long-running series. Harry remains the determined investigator, a “grinder”, and his relationship with Soto was great once he understood how determined she was to find justice for the dead children. The way they gradually solved each case was engaging and kept me reading late into the night.
It’s also Harry’s last case as an LAPD detective. This is a little sad, but, he was already about a year away from full retirement. And there are more Bosch books, and Renée Ballard books, so no shortage of compelling cases to look forward to.

Solid police procedural with my old fave Harry Bosch with a new partner Lucy (Lucky) Soto on the cold-case files. Harry has a year to go on his DROP pension extension and is looking to make every case count and finds in Soto a worthy partner to mentor as part of his legacy. This mostly excluded the police department politics and back-stabbing stuff which I'm not a fan of anyway. Bosch & Soto tackle two cold-case files, one a delayed murder where the victim has now died 10 years after a shooting, the other a 20-year old arson case which has a personal connection for Soto. It all wraps up too quickly and leaves us worrying for Bosch down the road.
The book includes a good plug for the doc film "Sound of Redemption: The Frank Morgan Story" about the jazz saxophonist, which author Connelly executive produced, with Bosch listening to downloaded tunes from the soundtrack (which I don't think exists yet actually - Harry Bosch an illegal downloader!?)

Review: One Bosch novel is, and is not, like the others. This one seemed a little slower than some of the others. And I felt like it was lacking the personal touch that the others have all contained, but nonetheless, it was an entertaining read.
